Amazing Winners of the GDT Nature Photographer of the Year 2024

A dreamy winter scene has earned Dieter Damschen the title of GDT Nature Photographer of the Year. The competition is run by the Germany Society for Nature Photographers to highlight the talent of its members. This year, 481 members from 13 countries entered just under 8,000 images. Damschen rose to the top with his photo of trees dusted with snow as a winter flood swept through Germany's Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve.

Haunting Image Showing Human Toll of Israel-Hamas War Named 2024 World Press Photo of the Year

A haunting look at the human toll of the Israel-Hamas war has been named the 2024 World Press Photo of the Year. Taken by Palestinian photojournalist Mohammed Salem for Reuters, it shows a woman cradling the body of her 5-year-old niece, who was killed when an Israeli missile struck their home. Based in the Gaza Strip, Salem has a first-hand view of the horrors of war and took the image at a hospital morgue.

Powerful Regional Winners From the 2024 World Press Photo Contest

The World Press Photo Contest has announced the 2024 regional winners in a showcase of global photojournalism. In spotlighting these photographers, they invite the public to step outside of the news cycle and examine prominent and overlooked stories from around the world. The awarded photographs were selected from 61,062 entries by 3,851 photographers from 130 countries. They were judged first by six regional juries, and then a global jury chose the winners.

60 Incredible Finalists Announced From the Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest

The 60 finalists of the 21st annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest have been revealed. Selected from more than 30,000 submissions from 128 countries and territories, these finalists are now in the running for the Grand Prize, as well as the Reader's Choice Award. Spread across six categories—Travel, People, American Experience, Natural World, Drone/Aerial, and Artistic—the finalists captured beauty from all corners of the world.
