What do you do with old train tickets? If you're like most people, you probably throw them out once you get to your stop. But for one X user, who simply goes by the username of Yota8nsx, train tickets are something to be appreciated. Their entire account is dedicated to documenting the history of the Japanese Hankyu Railway from the 1950s and 60s, and when they are not posting photos of old train cars, they have another passion—sharing old train tickets.

If you think you know what train tickets look like, think again because what Yota8nsx posts is nothing short of art. Many of the designs feature famous sights from around Japan, including Mount Fuji. The paper normally has brightly colored, abstract designs in the background, firmly giving the tickets a 60s pop art feel. Foliage is often painted in with a brush pen, giving the tickets a beautiful, handmade feeling.

The themes of the tickets also correspond to which train they belong to, with several tickets having nighttime designs for evening routes. Others have minimalist maps printed at the bottom, with little drawn icons of landmarks that correspond to each of the stops. Each ticket is a testament to the skills of the artist, as no two designs are alike.

To see when Yota8nsx posts next, be sure to follow their X.

Yota8nsx's Twitter account is dedicated to posting vintage Japanese railway photos, including beautifully designed tickets.

Vibrant Travel Posters Celebrate the Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright: Timeless

“The Pearce House” by DKNG Studios

In the nearly 70 years since his death, Frank Lloyd Wright‘s architecture has continued to inspire. Whether designing museums like New York City's Guggenheim or creating stunning residences like Fallingwater, his ability to create aesthetically pleasing, functional architecture has arguably been unparalleled. For the past several years, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and Spoke Art have come together to produce a traveling pop-up show that demonstrates the continued relevance of three famed architect's work.

Frank Lloyd Wright: Timeless is a group exhibition that sees artists from around the world create travel posters based on the architect's iconic buildings. Designed in the style of 1930s-era Works Progress Administration (WPA) travel posters, these original illustrations are truly timeless interpretations of Wright's work.

DKNG Studios focuses on the curving lines of The Pearce House, a Usonian masterpiece from 1950. The bright, bold colors only highlight the home's hemicycle design. Italian designers Van Orton focus on one of Wright's unbuilt masterpieces, Morris House. This spectacular residence was meant to be built into a cliff overlooking the San Francisco Bay. While it never came to fruition, Van Orton's work is a wonderful look at Wright's vision.

The traveling exhibition was on display at Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona. Once Wright's winter home and studio, it is now the headquarters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Though the show only lasted for a weekend, all of the designs can be viewed—and purchased—on Spoke Art's website. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

John Gould's Hummingbirds Poster

Before photography, it was up to illustrators to accurately record plants and animals. In the 19th century, artist John Gould set out to capture all of the known species of hummingbirds at the time, which meant traveling to different continents to observe their appearances. Ultimately, these efforts culminated in A Monograph of the Trochilidæ, or Family of Humming-Birds, a five volume series of 360 hand-colored lithographic plates. While each of these illustrations is stunning on their own, Nicholas Rougeux took it upon himself to make a new way to enjoy Gould's magnum opus, by meticulously restoring each lithograph and artfully arranging them into a dynamic poster.

“The monograph is considered one of the finest examples of ornithological illustration ever produced, as well as a scientific masterpiece. Included in the lengthy introduction was also a complete list of 416 species,” Rougeux explains. After finding high-quality scans of the project via the Internet Archive, he set out to bring the lithographs back to their original vibrant state. “A key goal I had for this project was to find an interesting way to introduce the subject of hummingbirds to new visitors,” Rougeux writes. “I wanted to highlight the large variety of hummingbirds in Gould’s monograph on the home page as a way to engage visitors, so I planned to create a murmuration that included a hummingbird from each illustration. Ironically, hummingbirds travel alone and not in flocks, but displaying them in a murmuration still felt like a fun design exercise.”

Rougeux painstakingly arranged each hummingbird in the murmuration to ensure that each one was evenly spaced. He also wanted to display the group according to color, so that it starts with blue birds at the top and shifts into the brighter, warmer colored species. Additionally, while the original lithographs included a simple background with plants, Rougeux isolated each bird to fit into the mumuration. However, he still wanted to add some sort of setting for the hummingbirds, and created a watercolor mountain and cloud background in AI. “I have mixed feelings about AI-generated imagery but generating these images for this purpose felt like an interesting experiment that worked out well,” he says. The collage is enhanced by text labels which identify each species on the poster.

It's hard to imagine the history of an entire music genre contained in one poster. However, Dorothy specializes in prints that are as educational as they are beautiful to look at. The UK-based studio produced a mesmerizing tribute to the development of hip-hop music in the Inside Information: Boombox poster. This amazing piece of design is especially significant as we approach the 50th anniversary of the genre.

The three-color litho print celebrates 100 of the greatest moments in the history of hip-hop in the form of a JVC RC-M90 boombox, starting with DJ Kool Herc's Back to School Jam in the Bronx on August 11, 1973. This project was a collaboration between James Quail and Malik Thomas. “We both love hip-hop and we started by listing out all our favorite stories that we wanted to show, from classic moments like DJ Kool Herc’s Back to School Jam, to stories like Grand Wizzard Theodore inventing scratching (when his mum came into his room to tell him to turn the music down he tried to stop a record spinning and accidentally moved it backward and forwards and invented the scratching technique),” Quail tells My Modern Met. “Or Boogie Down Productions and The Juice Crew feuding over the true birthplace of hip-hop in Bridge Wars, or Sylvia Robinson meeting Big Bank Hank at the Pizzeria through to views of artists and label-mates just hanging out together and we tried to surround them with little clues and easter eggs to their inspirations and influences, so there are nods to films that the artists list as influences or things they’ve sampled.”

There are cameos of over 350 hip-hop artists in the poster, including Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre, Beastie Boys, Wu-Tang Clan, and Lil Wayne. “Malik who illustrated it is a massive hip-hop head and it really was a labor of love for him, so it spiraled out of control as we just added more and more references and it was quite hard to know when to stop as there’s just always more amazing things to hear and discover or stories that we'd remember,” Quail adds. “But I think we’ve crammed a lot of what we love in there, hopefully, the people can feel our love for the subject through it.”

You can purchase the Inside Information: Boombox poster via Dorothy's website for £30 (approximately $38.34).

New York Unveils New ‘We ❤️ NYC’ Logo as a Reimagining of the Iconic ‘I ❤️ NY’ Logo

Whether you’re a visitor or a lifelong resident, you’re undoubtedly familiar with the iconic I ❤️ NY logo that’s emblazoned on t-shirts and throughout New York City. Now, a new campaign is taking a cue from this beloved emblem. The city has introduced a logo that looks similar to Milton Glaser’s 1977 creation: We ❤️ NYC. The ad campaign is meant to bring a sense of optimism to the city’s future and encourage residents to make a difference on their block and the metropolis at large.

“We’re hopefully going to be able to cut through divisiveness and negativity,” said Kathryn Wylde, the president and chief executive of Partnership for New York City, an association made up of corporations and business executives with the intent to advance New York City’s future. “We want to remind them we don’t have to maintain these divisions that have grown up between business and labor and rich and poor.”

We ❤️ NYC has some familiar elements. The font is the same that’s used on NYC’s subway signs, and Glaser's 2D heart has been replaced with an emoji that has some dimensionality to it. The emoji heart, however, will be just one graphic element sandwiched between “We” and “NYC.” The creative team is planning on adding New York City-specific emoji. “We hope the identity system grows along with community spirit and optimism within the city,” explained designer Graham Clifford.

There have been obvious comparisons between Glaser’s I ❤️ NY logo and the new We ❤️ NYC. One of the biggest differences, as many see it, is the authenticity of the creation. Glaser famously sketched the logo on the back of an envelope while riding in a taxi cab. It had an air of spontaneity and simplicity that comes from the self-expression of one person. And for fans of the I ❤️ NY logo, that makes it utterly perfect. (The symbol has since become a trademarked logo that’s owned by the New York State Department of Economic Development.)

We ❤️ NYC, by contrast, has not found the same love. “Don't mess with perfection [of I ❤️ NY],” one Twitter reaction read. “The original looks like the voice of a city,” another tweeted. “The new one looks like the voice of an investment bank or possibly a healthcare provider.”

The Partnership for New York City has unveiled We ❤️ NYC, a campaign meant to bring a sense of optimism to the city’s future and encourage civic engagement. It uses a heart emoji which will eventually be swapped with other NYC-centric imagery.

Famous Logos Redrawn as Medieval Art by Ilya Stallone

When you mention the likes of McDonald's, Twitter, and Amazon, the logos of these brands immediately come to mind. Artist Ilya Stallone continues to explore the power of these world-famous symbols by reimagining their designs in a creative new way. Inspired by the distinct style of Medieval art, he redraws different logos so they could easily be placed in manuscripts from the Middle Ages.

Stallone channels the aesthetics of centuries ago for each of these quirky illustrations, which often means leaning into a macabre sense of humor. In the case of McDonald's iconic “M,” for instance, there is a decapitated clown head throwing up two arches of yellow liquid. Similarly, the Mercedes three-point star is remade with a figure tied to a torture wheel. Some of the redraws are a little more light-hearted however. Spotify's three bars are replaced with a selection of old instruments, and Rolex's crown sits atop a frog as a reference to the fairytale.

Although these illustrations are made digitally, they possess a similar feeling to a drawing made on old parchment paper. Stallone maintains this vintage feel by using thick black lines around the subjects, and placing each logo against an old paper-like background. And in case the new motifs aren't clear, Stallone usually adds the name of the brand in a Medieval font to complete the effect.

You can keep up to date with Stallone's latest work by following him on Instagram and Twitter.

Information visualization is a powerful way to convey knowledge. For many people, it’s easier to understand complex subjects when they are organized in beautiful and thoughtful ways. Typographic technician Aaron Kuehn has created a collection of designs that use typography to construct the things about which they are informing us. The results are ingeniously developed and educational at the same time.

Knowledge is at the heart of Kuehn’s work. “My typographic artwork is arranged to communicate a comprehensive understanding of a complete system to the viewer,” he tells My Modern Met, “in a format that encourages discovery and specific learning and simultaneously a holistic understanding of the interrelationships within a system.”

This is, perhaps, best displayed in his piece titled Skeleton Typogram. It features a skeleton taking a long stride, and every component of the figure has been “typo-grammatically replaced with 676 free and fused glyphs” to form one complete diagram. At once we can see the types of bones in the human body and how they allow us to move.

As helpful as this visualization is for us, it’s a positive for Kuehn, too. “The most enjoyable part of creating my typographic artwork is doing the foundational research,” he shares. “Only once I completely understand the systems myself can I start to translate that understanding into a novel, useful, compact, and possibly elegant artwork.”

Kuehn sells his work, including prints of these designs, on his website.

Some music videos are short films. They have a plot and character development with a budget to match. With millions of dollars spent on them, they are more expensive than your favorite indie flick. If you want to see just how much they cost, take a look at Bo McCready’s fascinating infographic ranking the most expensive music videos of all time. In an extensive list, he organizes the highest cost to the lowest cost (which is still pretty pricey) using data from Wikipedia.

So, what video takes the top spot? That honor goes to Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson’s 1995 hit “Scream” which is a futuristic black-and-white music video that set a Guinness World Record for being the most expensive short film ever made. It cost a staggering $11.9 million (adjusted) to produce. Not far behind is Madonna’s “Express Yourself” at $10.4 million.

McCready was inspired to create the data visualization while watching the show Dave starring actor Lil Dicky and reading his Wikipedia page. “I noticed that he was responsible for one of the most expensive videos and remembered many of the others listed from my childhood,” he tells My Modern Met. “Lots of my creative data work starts by falling down a Wikipedia rabbit hole!”

That rabbit hole led to some surprises. “Probably my biggest surprise was that certain notoriously ‘big’ videos like [Michael Jackson’s] ‘Thriller’ didn't rank higher. I think this really reinforces the high cost of CGI vs. practical effects that can be tough to pull off but don't cost nearly as much.”

This graphic is far from the only one that McCready has created. “A lot of us who do data visualization as a hobby work in analytics, business intelligence, and/or data science,” he explains. “It's a lot of fun to use the same tools we master during our day jobs for something more creative. I come from generations of visual artists and I'm married to one as well, and while I may not have the same talents as them, this is my creative outlet.”

Ever wondered what was the most expensive music video ever produced? Bo McCready has you covered with his extensive infographic.

As the war continues in Ukraine, more big brands are expressing their disapproval of Putin's actions by halting their operations in Russia. Artist Václav Kudělka finds humor in a dark situation by reimagining what the logos of these companies would say in his series of clever designs.

The Czech Republic-based graphic designer has been a fan of puns since he was a child and loves to find ways to incorporate wit into his creations. “I saw an opportunity to use wordplay to speak to the current situation,” Kudělka tells My Modern Met. “I wanted to talk about the way because I believe we have to keep talking about it to show that we care. But I also wanted to address it in a different way, and add some humor.”

Most of these redraws are instantly recognizable, with just a subtle change to the design and name of the brand. For instance, McDonald's iconic slogan “I'm Lovin' It” has been changed to “I'm Leavin' It” and Starbucks has become “Starbacks,” with its famed mermaid turning its back to the viewer. Similarly, Kudělka changed Netflix to “Nyetflix” (a play on nyet, the Russian word for “no”), Spotify to “Stopify,” and FedEx to “Fedexit.” The artist hopes that the playfulness of these logos brings some much-needed levity in these dire times.
