What do you do with old train tickets? If you're like most people, you probably throw them out once you get to your stop. But for one X user, who simply goes by the username of Yota8nsx, train tickets are something to be appreciated. Their entire account is dedicated to documenting the history of the Japanese Hankyu Railway from the 1950s and 60s, and when they are not posting photos of old train cars, they have another passion—sharing old train tickets.

If you think you know what train tickets look like, think again because what Yota8nsx posts is nothing short of art. Many of the designs feature famous sights from around Japan, including Mount Fuji. The paper normally has brightly colored, abstract designs in the background, firmly giving the tickets a 60s pop art feel. Foliage is often painted in with a brush pen, giving the tickets a beautiful, handmade feeling.

The themes of the tickets also correspond to which train they belong to, with several tickets having nighttime designs for evening routes. Others have minimalist maps printed at the bottom, with little drawn icons of landmarks that correspond to each of the stops. Each ticket is a testament to the skills of the artist, as no two designs are alike.

To see when Yota8nsx posts next, be sure to follow their X.

Yota8nsx's Twitter account is dedicated to posting vintage Japanese railway photos, including beautifully designed tickets.

Elementary School Teacher Creatively Demonstrates the Power of Words Using Toothpaste

Even with the very best of intentions, everyone has probably said something that they regretted at some point in their lives. It can be easy to forget how impactful our words can be until it is too late to take them back. But just because we have faced this problem doesn't mean that the future generations have to, and one elementary school teacher is doing her best to teach kids about the power of words while they're still young.

Natalie Ringold is a fourth grade teacher from Minnesota, who routinely uploads clips of her lessons online. These earnest and impactful lessons, as well as the way she communicates with her students, have earned her a large online following, with her Instagram having over 179,000 followers. One of these recent lesson videos, which was recorded on the last day of the 2024 school year, has since gone viral.

In the clip, Ringold teaches her students that what they say matters and affects the people around them. She starts the clip by explaining that, “If somebody can't change something about themselves in 30 seconds or less, then you shouldn't mention it to them.” After elaborating on this idea, Ringold uncaps the tube of toothpaste she has been holding and begins squeezing it onto her desk.

“If you say something that someone can't change in 30 seconds or less,” Ringold says, as she attempts to press the toothpaste back into the narrow opening of the tube, “you try to fix it, you try to apologize, you try to take the words back… but it's something that they can't change about themselves and so it's very messy. You can't totally take those words back. You can't totally fix it.”

Eventually, the teacher gives up on the impossible task, leaving a small pile of blue goo on her desk. However, she is sure to leave her students with a positive end to the lesson.

“Your words have power and your words matter,” Ringold says. “If you walk out of this room spreading kindness to the people around you, spreading love to the people around you, that is what truly makes a difference.”

On June 17, 2024, media mogul Oprah Winfrey shared a heartfelt message of congratulations for Bongeka Zuma on her graduation from Stanford University's Doctor of Medicine program. After becoming a member of the first graduating class of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa, Zuma went on to graduate summa cum laude at Spelman College, earned a master's degree from the University of Oxford and finally, received her doctorate.

In the post, Winfrey shared photos and videos from the ceremony, as well as a touching throwback photo of her hugging Zuma at the student's graduation from her leadership academy in 2007. She also explained why this moment meant so much to her.

“I’ve been to 22 graduations for all my daughter-girls who came from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa to colleges and universities across the United States,” Winfrey said. “This one was extra special… One of the great joys of my life was to see her walk across that stage! Knowing where she’s come from, a small community in KwaZulu-Natal, and how strongly she believed in becoming a doctor. She never gave up, and with a support team of good friends, fellow OWLAG sisters and professors, we all celebrated her achievement with great pride.”

When the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa originally opened, it received 3,500 applications from around the country. In the end, it accepted 152 girls, one of whom was Zuma. The program accepts girls in 8-12 grade. According to their website, the academy “strive(s) to raise future leaders who are able to navigate a variety of social and cultural context, and who will remain committed to the development of South Africa, the African continent, and the entire globe.”

Congratulations to Zuma, as well as the former and current students of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa, as they embark on their next journey and set out to become changemakers in their communities.

Much of the continental United States is under a heat advisory at the moment due to rising summer temperatures. In response to this, the U.S. Government recently released guidelines on what temperatures people should keep their thermostats at during the summer, recommending 78°F when you're home, 85°F when you're away, and 82°F when you're sleeping. However, these suggestions have sparked quite a bit of controversy online.

Many people feel that the proposed settings are way too high. In response, everyone has taken to the internet to lament the recommended temperatures and what it would mean to exist under such (literally) heated circumstances. “0% chance the people who came up with these recommendations actually use them in their homes,” said one person on X (formerly Twitter).

Most individuals agree that the high figures would make homes way too hot, especially for sleeping. One user has questioned, “Who amongst us can sleep in 82 degrees? This I need to understand.” Another person had even stronger words for the suggested temperatures, saying, “The entire town is going without power if I have to sleep at 82 degrees.”

You can read more of these scandalized but entertaining responses below.

The U.S. Government recently published recommendations on thermostat temperatures in people's homes for the summer. However, many people feel that the suggested temperatures are too hot, and have chimed in online.

Some questioned the sleeping temperature recommendations of 82°F.

Others pointed out that these suggestions may work in certain parts of the U.S. but definitely not hotter states.

Some people posited theories about a “big heat” conspiracy.

Others were simply flabbergasted, and opted to express their shock through all caps.

Artist Ira Volkova paints large-scale flower portraits that serve as a love letter to every part of the blossoming plant. With each stroke of her brush, she is able to perfectly capture the likeness of every bloom she paints, magnifying the usually small, delicate features in sprawling detail that spans across canvases larger than the artist herself.

Volkova, who is from Ukraine, is inspired by the flowers growing in her garden as well as the botanical gardens in Kyiv. She routinely takes photos of beautiful blooms that she later uses as the basis for her paintings. Sometimes, she perfectly copies the flower that she captured with her camera. Other times, she uses the photo as inspiration, only to turn around and create something entirely new.

Regardless of the scale of her work, many of Volkova's paintings share the same key elements. The artist's work tends to favor full flowers with lots of petals, especially peonies. Through her painting, she shines a spotlight on flora that have vibrant pinkish hues. Volkova also renders her floral subjects against fairly simple backgrounds. They tend to either be a solid color or a soft gradient, making sure to be as unobtrusive as possible while simultaneously highlighting the grandeur of her beloved botanicals.

To keep up with the painter's latest works, be sure to follow Volkova on Instagram. If you are interested in purchasing one of her paintings, check out her Singulart.

When was the decimal point invented?

For centuries, the earliest known use of the decimal point appeared in 1593, when the German mathematician Christopher Clavius wrote it in an astronomy book. Since then, it has radically changed the course of mathematics. However, it was recently discovered that the first documented use of the decimal point was not in 1593 but over 100 years before in Renaissance Italy.

When the Venetian merchant Giovanni Bianchini wrote Tabulae primi mobilis in the 1440s, he used the decimal point to calculate the coordinates of the planets. By doing this, Bianchini invented the system of decimals, which would, in turn, make scientific calculations far more accurate. Years later, Clavius would borrow Bianchini's decimal point, leading to confusion about the true origins of the mathematical symbol.

In a recent NPR episode, Glen Van Brummelen, a historian of mathematics, recounted how he discovered Bianchini's invention. In the episode, Brummelen said, “I was working on the manuscript of this astronomer, Giovanni Bianchini. I saw the dots inside of a table—in a numerical table.”

“And when he explained his calculations, it became clear that what he was doing was exactly the same thing as we do with the decimal point. And I'm afraid I got rather excited at that point. I grabbed my computer, ran up and down the dorm hallway looking for colleagues who still hadn't gone to bed, saying, this person's working with the decimal point in the 1440s. I think they probably thought I was crazy.”

You can listen to the rest of the episode here.

A mathematical historian recently discovered that the decimal point is about 150 years older than we thought. It was first used in a text by Venetian merchant Giovanni Bianchini in the 1440s.

When Sam Fisher took his two young sons and their 11-year-old cousin on a hike in the Badlands of North Dakota, he was probably expecting a day of sightseeing and light exercise. What he could not have forseen, however, was the group stumbling upon the remains of a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex that had lived millions of years ago. Their find, which occurred in 2022, was deemed an “incredible discovery” by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and will soon be on display at the museum.

The group of amateur paleontologists, including Fisher's sons Jessin, 12, and Liam, 9, were surely excited by their discovery, but also handled the fossil with all the reverence it deserved. Fisher sent a photo of the find to his old high school classmate, Dr. Tyler Lyson, a paleontologist and curator of vertebrate paleontology with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and asked for advice. The following summer, Dr. Lyson arrived on the site with the family as well as a skilled team to excavate the fossil. Together, they were able to unearth the remains of a teenage Tyrannosaurus Rex, with all parties pitching in and contributing to the dig.

It is rare to find intact Tyrannosaurus rex fossils, and even more rare to find the remains of a juvenile, so Dr. Lyson was thrilled when he realized what they had unearthed. The fossil, which has since been dubbed “Teen Rex,” is estimated to have been between 12 and 14 years old at the time of death. Even though it was still growing, the dinosaur already weighed 3,500 pounds and was 25 feet long, though these impressive measurements still put it at about half the size of a fully developed T. rex.

“By going outside and embracing their passions and the thrill of discovery, these boys have made an incredible dinosaur discovery that advances science and deepens our understanding of the natural world,” says Dr. Lyson. “I'm excited for Museum guests to dig into the “Teen Rex Discovery” experience, which I think will inspire the imagination and wonder, not only our community, but around the world!”

The fossil will be on display as part of the temporary Discovering Teen Rex exhibition, which opens at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science on June 12, 2024. In addition to the exhibition, the museum will also be screening a new 40-minute documentary T. REX, that captures the remarkable story.

A group of teens discovered a rare juvenile T. rex fossil while on a hike in the Badlands of North Dakota.

Purchasing a bar of soap at the store isn't quite the same as making your own. In fact, very few people understand the work that goes into making it. For luxury soaps, this process is even more entailed, meaning that even fewer people grasp the full amount of time and effort involved in soap-making. Thankfully, an eye-opening video by @ugyarneo762kgebr on TikTok recently posted online illustrates this soap-making process using unique ingredients, including silk and coconut.

The soap in the video is coconut-based, and much of the first part of the video shows a man cutting up the fruit and crushing the coconut flesh so that it becomes milk. After sitting for two days, the milk turns into a thick coconut cream, which the soap maker (or soaper) leaves to solidify. While this process is underway, the video shows him harvesting pear blossom flowers for their pleasant aroma and leaving them to dry. The soaper is also seen cutting apart silkworm cocoons and boiling them in hot water to break down the fibers and make it easy to pull the silk apart.

In the final steps of the soap-making process, the man in the video pours a mixture of edible alkali and the liquidy silk substance into a bowl with the solidified coconut cream, blending it together before adding his final two ingredients—crushed pearls and olive oil. After mixing these in, he carefully pours the creamy, off-white soap mixture into a beautiful wooden mold, where it hardens and is later cut into familiar, thick, rectangular blocks.

Even more impressive, the man uses traditional soap-making techniques, relying on a mixture of wooden and stone implements to form the soap. While the video does not show someone trying out the final product for themselves, one can only imagine what a luxurious feeling it must provide.

As it gets warmer outside, many people will want to go outdoors and experience all of their favorite summertime activities. Whether these include going to the beach or pool, eating your favorite icy treat, or simply enjoying the good weather, all of these pastimes involve being in the sun. Needless to say, you should always apply sunscreen before going outside in the heat in order to protect yourself from a variety of skin conditions, but there may be one key spot where you are forgetting to apply it.

Dermatologist Dr. Michael Park warns in a TikTok video that people often forget to apply sunscreen to their ears, leaving this part of this body susceptible to being burnt. Park explains that many people aren't particularly concerned about the possibility of skin cancer, or melonoma, as the most common variety isn't normally fatal. However, he warns that this demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the treatment process of this cancer.

“Although the most common type of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, will likely not kill you, you literally have to cut it out,” Park explains. “Not just it, but the skin surrounding it to make sure that it doesn't come back. Now I don't know anyone who wants to get a large piece of skin cut out of them, but personally I think there are certain areas that would be way worse than others, and one of those places… is the ears.”

The key takeaway is to be sure to apply your sunscreen on the outer portion of your ears this summer. While out in the heat, experts suggest reapplying sunscreen once every two hours, especially if you are swimming or playing sports.

You can watch Park's full video below.

Growing up, many of us were probably told not to play with our food. But what happens when the people responsible for making our food find a way to have fun with it instead? Baker Chiew See of Autumn Kitchen takes this to heart as she tries to instill joy in her mouthwatering culinary creations.

See will often model her food off of animals, and a recent reel shows her making adorable squid-shaped sausage rolls that are almost too cute to eat. The video begins with the Malaysian chef making her dough from scratch and rolling it out into a flat rectangle. Then, she slices one side of the sausages so that they are split into eight separate strips, one strip for each tentacle of the squid. After wrapping the uncut half of the sausage in dough and placing it in the oven, See finishes her process by affixing edible eyes to the outside of the scrumptious squid.

The result is a puffy, golden-brown sausage roll that not only tastes delicious, but also has a larger-than-life personality. But if seeing isn't believing and you need to taste the adorable snack yourself, See kindly writes the ingredients and cooking instructions in the description of every video she posts, allowing you to recreate all of her cute cuisines. With over 1,700 posts on her Instagram, there is no shortage of recipes for you to make in your own free time.

To keep up with her latest culinary creations, you can follow her on See on Instagram or Facebook. For longer length tutorial videos, you can subscribe to Autumn Kitchen on YouTube.
